THE CORE MODEL

"We may not always be in control over what occurs in life. We do have command of the mindset used, and the spirit we bring to what we choose to do about it."

What Motivates Employees

The core model suggests there are two sources of motivation that drive human beings. The first source manifests when there is a real, imagined, or anticipated loss of any kind: a loss of safety, security, control, positive regard, certainty, or well being. These losses will drive what we refer to as "triggered states." When triggered, employees will engage in automatic pre-programmed thoughts, mannerisms, feelings, and behaviors referred to as "coping mechanisms."

Examples of coping mechanisms found at work include argumentative or positional thinking, adversarial relationships, inability to solve problems, sarcasm, shutting down, inability to communicate effectively, excessive worry, making the same mistake repeatedly, complaining, blaming, defensiveness, etc.

Autoprotective State

Employees use automatic and impulsive behavior that, while appearing to be self-protective, ends up being counter-productive for emotional well being, effective communication, productivity, and company morale.

The primary driver and fundamental focus for the triggered employee is self-protection. This drive for self-protection gives rise to a state of consciousness we refer to as the Autoprotective State.

The Autoprotective State prevents employees from utilizing the part of the brain involved in global thinking, objectivity, intuition, creativity, and positive thoughts. This state of consciousness prevents people from viewing the present situation objectively. Problem solving becomes tedious and unproductive. Relationships are impaired, productivity diminishes, and company climate is adversely affected.

The Starquest Trigger Recovery Process helps employees convert impulsive reaction to intentional action.

The Authentic State

The second source of motivation occurs when employees are inspired by a vision greater than their own personal survival.

People have an intrinsic desire to be productive, to pursue a sense of active mastery; they seek meaning, to experience love, and to provide for their needs while caring about others. This source of motivation gives rise to a state of consciousness we refer to as The Authentic State.

Feeling joyous, being mentally agile, peak performance, creativity, collaboration, aligning to a vision, and memorable customer service are attributes of the Authentic State.

Our core competence and coaching methodologies focus on helping leaders and their teams quickly shift from autoprotective functioning to authentic communication, collaboration, and alignment of focus.
